Why People Take the Enneagram Test
The Enneagram is one of the most psychologically rich personality frameworks available — not because it was invented recently by researchers, but because it surfaces something other tests sidestep: the underlying motivation that drives your behavior. Not just what you do, but why you do it, and what you're most deeply afraid of.
Where MBTI describes cognitive patterns and the Big Five maps trait dimensions, the Enneagram describes nine fundamental ways of relating to the world — each with its own core desire, core fear, and characteristic defense mechanisms. Understanding your type doesn't just tell you how you behave. It tells you what drives you when you're under stress, what makes you feel secure, and what growth path is specific to your type.
This free Enneagram test covers all nine types and their wings — the adjacent types that shade your primary pattern. You'll get your primary type, wing identification, and a plain-language result explaining what that combination means for you.
Overview of All 9 Enneagram Types
Each type has a core motivation, a core fear, and a characteristic stress response. The test will surface which pattern fits you most precisely.
The Reformer
Principled, purposeful, self-controlled. Fears being corrupt or defective.
The Helper
Caring, interpersonal, generous. Fears being unwanted or unworthy of love.
The Achiever
Success-oriented, adaptable, image-driven. Fears being worthless or failing.
The Individualist
Introspective, expressive, romantic. Fears having no identity or significance.
The Investigator
Perceptive, innovative, secretive. Fears being incompetent or overwhelmed.
The Loyalist
Committed, security-seeking, responsible. Fears abandonment and being without support.
The Enthusiast
Spontaneous, versatile, scattered. Fears being trapped in pain or deprivation.
The Challenger
Powerful, decisive, confrontational. Fears being controlled or violated by others.
The Peacemaker
Easygoing, self-effacing, agreeable. Fears conflict and loss of connection.
Wings, Instincts, and What They Add
Wings are the Enneagram types on either side of your primary type. Every type has two possible wings, and most people have one dominant wing that flavors their core type. A Type 5 with a 4-wing (5w4) has a more artistic, emotional quality than a Type 5 with a 6-wing (5w6), who is more practical and security-oriented. Wings aren't about being two types — they're about shading.
Instinct subtypes go one layer deeper. The three instincts — self-preservation, social, and one-to-one — shape how your core type expresses itself in daily behavior. The optional detailed report includes your instinct stack analysis.

How the Enneagram Compares to the 16-Type System
These two frameworks get at different things, which is why many people find them complementary rather than redundant.
- MBTI / 16 Types answers: How do you process information and make decisions? It maps cognitive function preferences.
- Enneagram answers: What motivates you? What are you most afraid of? How do you behave under stress vs. security?
An INTJ and a Type 5 are often the same person — but not always, and the overlap isn't complete. If you want to explore your 16-type profile alongside your Enneagram type, our 16 Types test is just as free. Also explore our Big Five personality test for the most scientifically validated framework.
What to Expect from This Test
The Enneagram is different from most personality tests: honesty is harder. Many questions ask about your motivations and fears. Answer based on your default patterns, especially under stress — not your idealized self.
Expect the test to take about 10–15 minutes. After completing it, you'll see your primary type, your likely wing, and a description of your core motivation and fear pattern. The optional $1.99 detailed report adds:
- Wing analysis comparing your two wing options
- Stress and security arrows (how you behave when stretched and when grounded)
- Growth path specific to your type
- Relationship patterns and common friction points
- Instinct subtype overview
